The Producers

2008 Season

July 16 – August 9, 2008

The Ogunquit Playhouse is thrilled to be one of the first regional theatres in the country to recreate the Broadway production featuring Robin Wagner’s fantastic Tony-Award winning sets and William Ivey Long’s spectacular Tony award winning costumes in this one time only star studded production of The Producers! The once great Broadway producer Max Bialystock has had a series of box office flops, his most recent a musical adaptation of HAMLET called “Funny Boy”. While reviewing Max’s financial records, Leopold Bloom, Max’s neurotic accountant, figures out that Max is making more money with his flops than with his successes. Max quickly devises a plan to find the worst script and the worst director for his next venture in order to ensure a spectacular flop. And it he doesn’t have to look far. With Springtime for Hitler, a gay romp about Adolf and Eva at Berchtesgaden”, a highly questionable musical written by Franz Leibkind, a Nazi sympathizer, and Roger DeBris, who just so happens to be fond of wearing dresses, the stage is set for failure and farce! In the end, Max and Leo’s scheme fails when “Springtime for Hitler” becomes a box office smash and Max and Leo’s troubles begin for real. Don’t miss a moment of the laughs as Mel Brook’s inimitable brand of humor takes audiences for a summertime romp on the Playhouse stage.

REVIEWS

"The first rate production of Mel Brooks' The Producers...one you ought to see." - Portland Press Herald

"The Producers' marks a new pinnacle of achievement in theater for this area... Cory English as Max Bialystock and Andy Taylor as Leo Bloom, the two producers of the show's title, are consummately professional and slick as black ice in their roles...This cast absolutely deserved the standing ovation it received... If you get a chance to get up to Ogunquit it would be worth every penny you have to spend...you'll have a ball!" - Portsmouth Herald
